Winter 2008: Precision Machine & Manufacturing Quarterly Newsletter

Welcome!

Here’s the first edition! Please give it a read. It’s Precision Machine & Manufacturing’s quarterly newsletter with material handling topics, success stories and processes that pack quality into Precision’s products. You’ll find new products announced here first, plus valuable tips and case histories that will help you run your operations for higher productivity and maximum uptime.

With the introduction of UpTimes, Precision debuts its new corporate logo. Gone are the interlocking gears in favor of a cleaner, clearer image with emphasis on what we do best:  Precision. The tightest tolerances, longest life, best performance; the qualities we’ve taken seriously since our founding in 1977, these are what set Precision apart from competitors. The precision engineering and manufacturing of our rotary valves, feeders and screw conveyors are summed up in our new tagline “Built precisely for maximum uptime.™”

Enjoy UpTimes and provide us with feedback on articles or information you would like to see in future quarterly issues.

Colmac Energy's Secret to Success - Reliability and Maximum Uptime

The Colmac Energy plant at night

Maximizing uptime and throughput are key factors enabling the country’s largest biomass power plant to consistently turn a profit. The key ingredients of success for Colmac Energy, Inc., operator of a 47 MW net biomass-fueled facility in the Coachella Valley of Riverside County, California, are the constant supply of quality landfill-diverted wood waste and the highest quality processing equipment.

The plant, which has been in continuous operation since 1992, consumes approximately 325,000 tons per year of wood waste, landscape and right-of-way tree trimmings, broken pallets and used boxes. The company will accept construction waste, but no treated wood or painted materials. About 12% of the plant’s fuel (40,000 tons per year) consists of locally collected agricultural residues that would otherwise have been disposed by burning in open fields. And because of Colmac’s plant, Riverside and San Bernardino counties are able to meet their state-mandated recycling standard (AB939).

PRODUCT FEATURE

The Precision Modular Double Rotor Self-Cleaning (PMDS) Rotary Valve

PMM's Double Rotor Modular Rotary ValveSome material handling operations handle “sticky” materials that tend to pack up in a rotary valve rather than pass freely through it.  Finding the metering device to properly handle these special cases has been a problem for many companies.

Precision Machine & Manufacturing developed the solution.  The PMDS Double Rotor (Self-Cleaning) Modular Rotary Valve is precisely engineered in the same manner as the unique PMV® modular rotary valve, introduced by PMM nearly 20 years ago.  The six vane closed-end rotor has rounded pockets for easy clean out, plus a second rotor which is synchronized and gear-driven to scrape the primary rotor clean on each revolution.  No more product packing!

Like the PMV rotary valve, the PMDS can be manufactured in standard (mild steel), severe duty (500 brinnel alloy), or ultra valve (case-hardened) models.  It can also be manufactured from stainless steel if required and is available in the same size range as the PMV rotary valve.  The PMDS Rotary Valve is machined to our uncompromising tight-tolerances and high-quality standards the industry expects from Precision Machine.

Our PMDS Double Rotor (Self-Cleaning) Modular Rotary Valve:

  • Six vane closed-end rotor with rounded pockets for easy clean out
  • Second rotor synchronized to scrape the primary rotor clean
  • Manufactured in standard, severe duty, ultra valve or stainless steel

Meet Precision's Sales Manager, Tony McNeil

Tony McNeil, Sales Manager

“I’m not a sales person.  I’m an engineer.”

That’s what Precision Machine’s Tony McNeil told a former manager back in the ‘70’s.  In fact, he is both - par excellence.  And his technical skill combined with his sensitivity to customers’ needs have helped propel Precision Machine and Manufacturing, Inc. to a position of leadership in the specialty equipment industry.

Following earning a BS in mechanical engineering from Marquette University, Tony’s first job was as a project engineer at paper manufacturer Kimberly Clark.  He moved on to work for Milwaukee hydraulic systems manufacturer, Oilgear, and then to Overly, Inc. in Neenah, Wisconsin, where he was a pressure vessel engineer and quality control manager.  Following that, Tony held multiple engineering jobs with mechanical contractors until he finally found his way in 1984 to Precision Machine and Manufacturing.
